Ojo Bio is proud to head up the Loma Azul Indigenous Women’s Empowerment Project here on the mainland of Bocas del Toro! Indigenous women of the local Ngabe tribe have basically zero opportunities for income. The mainland isn’t touristy like the islands. There are no outlets for the women to get their traditional handicrafts into the hands of tourists. Enter Ojo Bio!! We have started a project working with the women to provide an outlet to sell their traditional bags throughout Panama, the United States, and Canada (extra charge)! This is a LIFE CHANGING opportunity for these women, and I sincerely hope you will support their efforts. We currently have 3 co-ops with 14 women total making bags! These are wonderful, talented, hard working, proud ladies, and they are so excited for this opportunity! 100% of the bag price goes to the ladies. I only charge a nominal fee of $10 to try to cover the credit card processing, packing materials, shipping costs, and logistics. I donate my time for free.

Our annual bag sale is so important to these families. Christmas is coming, and school starts at the end of February. These families have no running water or electricity, and if the men are able to find work they generally only make between $15-$20 a DAY. In addition to trying to provide a wonderful holiday for their families, February is an especially difficult time financially for these families. They must buy school uniforms, books, school supplies, bus fare, etc… for their children. Most families have between 3-6 children, so the expenses are enormous. Education is very important to them. By selling these bags, they can pay for the things their children need! To you, $40 is a cheap lunch out for two. To them, it’s 2-3 days pay. You aren’t just buying a bag, you’re changing a LIFE!!!

Below is a video that explains all about how the bags are made, how the bag making co-op was created, and gives you a tour of the Loma Azul village- a place very rarely seen by outsiders!

Ordering bags is easy. Below is a gallery where you can see all of the bags. Open an image, then click the little squares on each side of the image to scroll through. They each have a code under the picture after you click on the thumbnail. Y is for yarn bags, T is for traditional bags, and P is for plastic bags. The second letter indicates which of our 3 co-ops the bags came from. If there is a third letter, that indicates the individual woman’s name (some co-ops split up their bags by individuals). After the 2 or 3 letter code there is a number. This code and number correspond to the codes on the order form. Scroll through the gallery, and write down the codes for the bags you want. Then, go to the secure order form to purchase. It’s that simple! The bag measurements are shown on the order form. Remember- they’re built to stretch and carry a load, so they’re actually larger than the flat measurements!
